Over the past few years, I have been striving to make my vegetable garden not only functional, but beautiful too. I grow as much as I can vertically to save space, and lately I’ve been trying to come up with creative ways to add structure and height to the vegetable garden.
I’ve always grown my pole beans vertically, and have been doing the same with my cucumbers for several years. A few years ago, I decided to try growing squash vertically as well. But I didn’t want to use a boring trellis. I wanted to make something that would be beautiful and dramatic – plus it had to inexpensive and easy to assemble.
I thought an arch over the center path in my vegetable garden would be cool, so I decided to build a squash arch using materials I already had. After I built it and put it into the garden, I envisioned how it would look once it was covered with squash. I knew it would be awesome, but it turned out to be even more amazing than I dreamed. I couldn’t be happier with it.
